The simple reason is that at some point the site had problems allowing me to post. Perhaps if this post shows up correctly, I'll start posting updates again.ZeqMacawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11658362457305052835noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306059065383463145.post-55196195195174176412012-07-23T20:46:00.002-04:002012-07-23T20:46:56.948-04:00Crowbar"Crowbar" seems a fitting name for a source engine model decompiler, and I am considering using this for the one I am working on. Using survivor_producer.mdl for most of my testing, my program extracts ~97% of the file's info.

It currently also does the following:

Creates a QC file, which has the following info:

$modelname

$model

flexfile

flex

flexcontroller

%flex

mouth

$lod

replacemodel

$poseparameter

$cdmaterials

$texturegroup

$attachment

$includemodel

$surfaceprop

$eyeposition

$illumposition

$sequence

$ikchain

$collisionjoints {}

$jigglebone

Creates the reference SMD file.

Creates the LOD SMD files.

Creates two log files for helping with testing.

I plan to figure out how to decompile animations ($animation and $sequence info to be placed into SMD files) and face animations ($model {flexfile} info to be placed into VTA files).
This should make it easier and faster (I keep saying that) to convert models.

As part of working out converting issues, I converted a model to replace Zoey. Not only did it help me work out more converting issues, I now have a beautiful new model almost ready for release. I'll leave it as a surprise what character I converted. My only hint: the character is a woman from Dissidia Final Fantasy.
That way, I could then essentially copy-paste the survivor's weightmap and wouldn't have to tweak it as much. The problem is that I often found it hard to move the converted model's mesh and have it still look right.

The trick I found: move the survivor's original rigged model to match as closely to the converted model and copy-paste *that* weightmap. This of course is much easier for me to do than moving mesh parts without a rigging. This trick will make it much quicker for me to convert models.
Sorry about that.

I have been working on a "MDL to SMD converter" (for lack of a better name) that I hope will become the replacement for MDLDecompiler (which isn't being updated). My main motivation for this comes from wanting to understand more about the L4D2 survivor models (including their animations).

I tested replacing Ellis model using Rochelle's animations. Most of the animations played correctly, but a few just showed the default "T-pose". I am not sure what is different, but I'd like to know, so I could make female animations work on the male characters (and vice-versa).ZeqMacawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11658362457305052835noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306059065383463145.post-18525536188618431822011-04-25T18:23:00.000-04:002011-04-25T18:23:04.578-04:00Working on Model RequestsOver the weekend, I converted and rigged the first two models requested, Trishka Novak and Claire Redfield. I only rigged the external models. I will try to finish their internal models and their related images for uploading by this next weekend.ZeqMacawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11658362457305052835noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306059065383463145.post-71598633731697456422011-04-12T16:39:00.000-04:002011-04-12T16:39:04.109-04:00Figuring Out Custom L4D2 Survivor ViewmodelsI just recently tried replacing the viewmodel (i.e. the arms of your own character in-game) of Rochelle to the one that the Jill Valentine model should use. I got the viewmodel working in the game, but I need to re-rig it. My usual "copy-paste weightmap" technique for rigging didn't quite work on that model. I'll have to rig manually, but that shouldn't be too difficult.ZeqMacawhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11658362457305052835noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5306059065383463145.post-67509849837502860132011-03-24T02:04:00.003-04:002011-04-05T23:51:45.568-04:00Request a L4D2 Character ModelRequest a character model for me to convert by providing a download link to the model file.
